Rotational superradiance detected for the first time in a water vortex flow which may mimic the effect of some kind of black holes (rotating black holes). From the paper’s abstract:We observed that waves propagating on the surface of water can be amplified after being scattered by a draining vortex. The maximum amplification measured was 14% ± 8%, obtained for 3.70 Hz waves, in a 6.25-cm-deep fluid, consistent with the superradiant scattering caused by rapid rotation. We expect our experimental findings to be relevant to black-hole physics, since shallow water waves scattering on a draining fluid constitute an analogue of a black hole, as...
Crazy About Creams! The Chantecaille Mermaid Eye Mattes
This month I am CRAZY ABOUT CREAMS. Stay tuned for some of my favorite cream makeup products all throughout January. One of these freakin’ days, man… One of these days after I’ve finally squatted my way to a J. Lo booty (please pause while I send up a short prayer to the booty gods), I’m gonna pop-pop-pop that thing whenever I wear the matte Chantecaille Cream Shadows, because they’re worthy of a booty pop or two. Or 12. Unfortunately, they have a pearl-clutching price of $34 for a 0.14-oz. jar, which, I know! — so expensive — but if it’s...
Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 585
So…what is the Monday Poll? Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. 1. What lipstick do you wear the most? Lately, MAC Velvet Teddy (that is, when it’s not falling in the toilet, OY!), because it goes with everything. 2. What’s your upper monetary limit for a...
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving, sweet friend! I hope your pants are stretchy enough to accommodate an extra helping (or two) of pie and that someone important to you is within cuddling reach. If you look closely, you’ll see me and Connor waving hi from the middle of the Pacific (aloha!). We’re spending the holiday with El Hub’s side of the family on East Oahu with a beach quite literally down the street. It’s kind of crazy to me that you can swing by the ocean here and see views like this on your way home from going to Safeway to buy gluten-free...

World Cancer Day.Cancer is a complex disease in different dimensions, pure research (causes and evolution at genetic level or Carcinogenesis), Clinical research (diagnosis, therapies, prognosis, palliative care, psychology…), epidemiology, social impact, etc…This implies a great transversality that involves the collaboration of multidisciplinary teams: doctors, chemists, physicists, engineers, etc…When you read the word “multidisciplinary” you can be sure that Physics has a major role in those teams. And in therapy research, Particle Physics (in combination with Applied Physics) has much to say, and of course CERN is the main front.Below are some of their lines of research, initiatives, resources and outcomes already...
